WE ARE THE GIRLINGTON CENTRE

The Girlington Centre works towards the prevention and relief of poverty in Girlington and the surrounding area by providing services to individuals in need.

 

The Centre building provides a community resource for the people of Bradford through which individuals of all ages and community groups can have access to meeting spaces, advice, advocacy, information, education, training, social and leisure opportunities.

Funding grants, commissioning and donations help run services

Encourage participation in events and community activities

Supporting equal rights and citizenship for all our communities

We believe in working towards social change. So we welcome opportunities, new ideas and approaches. We work with partners across the statutory and voluntary sector, with people and organisations that share our commitment to engage with all communities for a better and fairer society.

OUR MISSION

To relieve poverty, and the distress and sickness caused by it, through tackling health inequalities and social injustice, and by providing a sustainable community resource. We share our expertise and experience openly to accelerate collective learning and progress

OUR MANAGEMENT COMMITEE

ISABEL COOKE

 

Local Resident

Isabel comes from a background in community arts and has worked as an English teacher in 3 different countries, teaching students from primary age to adults. She was Head of the English Department at Mzingwane Boys’ Secondary School, Zimbabwe, before coming to Bradford, where she has worked in schools around the city. She has taught for Bradford College in various community settings, including at the Girlington Centre. Over 6 years, she designed and ran the curriculum for English language teaching in a refugee project, incorporating job search skills, CV writing, work experience and cultural orientation. She also designed and wrote a series of educational CD-ROMs about youth training and employment which have been used across Bradford’s schools. Isabel is an active member of her trade union branch and also a campaigner on environmental issues in Bradford West, where her daughter attended school and where she has lived for 30 years.

 

Qualifications: BA, MA (Cantab) English; Post Graduate Certificate in Education; Certificate in Interactive Multi-Media Production.

WAKAS AHMED



Wakas has worked as a disability advice worker, a Community Development worker, a Consultant/Trainer, and as Manager of a theatre Company. He has also volunteered for small voluntary groups.


Qualification -Law graduate plus legal practice course

VAL ROWLANDS

 

Local Resident

Val is currently a volunteer immigration adviser. Qualified as a primary teacher, worked in adult and community education as course tutor and developed community based adult education. MSc Public Policy Studies. Lecturer in higher education. Trainer in personnel practice and equalities Previously active in and committee member of community groups. Prepared cases and represented applicants in employment tribunals with special reference to discrimination. Organised campaigns and conferences and worked in community development.

 

Qualification: Employment law with discrimination as a specialism.

MOHAMMED SALIM

ZULFIQAR HUSSAIN

 

Local Resident

Zulfiqar has been a resident in the Girlington area for forty years, working as a driving instructor, sports coach and personal coach. He is currently the Chair of the Elderly Men's Group that meet at The Girlington Centre.
