COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT & FACILITIES

The Girlington Centre is a community hub which also houses a number of tenant and community organisations. The programme of activities offers something for a wide range of the community, from peer support groups to providing creative space, from opportunities to improve physical health to enabling community integration.  Our centre boasts two halls and a number of rooms which are used for a range of activities and which can be hired out at very reasonable rates.

The Community Centre also runs a number of health projects which can be seen Here.

WEEKLY CLASSES

We believe that all of us want to live meaningful lives, with access to opportunities for everyone, enabling ownership of our futures and empowering communities. Our range of weekly activities and groups work towards and support these aims.

PLAY SCHEMES AT GIRLINGTON

During the school holidays the Girlington Centre arranged play schemes for children..... below are some pictures of what they got up to.

The five week program for local children on free school meals offered them opportunities to take part in various activities based around health and well-being, nutrition, enrichment and team building. The children enjoyed arts and crafts, trips to Ilkley moor and Flamingo Land, with the physical activity part of the programme including martial arts, yoga and sports days (complete with medals for taking part!). Parents were involved in engaging with some of the healthy lunch and dinner ideas.  Overall a very successful summer!

OUR COMMUNITY GARDEN

In April 2021, with support from People and the Dales, we started creating a community garden where we can grow our own vegetables and increase the range of flowering plants to attract butterflies and bees. Our raised vegetable beds were planted up and quickly began to produce fresh rocket and salad leaves, French beans, broad beans, peas, onions, spinach, turnips, radish, kohl rabi, pak choi and potatoes. We hope Centre users will be involved in deciding what vegetables are grown during 2022.

Car park clearup

Before we could make a start on the garden we needed to clear some of the car park. A number of staff and volunteers came together to tackle the job, which included trees being lopped and clearing bulky items by skip.  The children were also involved with litter picking in the area, contributing to the huge effort made to change the outlook of the car park and the overall look of this little corner of the Girlington locality. The work has transformed the look of the car park, which is now being maintained and provides a lovely resting spot for staff and the community to use. Further expansion of the garden is planned over time.

The pictures below show some of the volunteers involved in the clean-up, and the fresh organic vegetables ready in just a short space of time.

FOOD PROVISION - SERVING OUR COMMUNITY

Food often plays an important role in what we do. From providing hot meals for those shielding during covid lock-downs, to participating in local Council schemes to provide food parcels for low-income families during school holidays, we work with community partners and local food banks to try and ensure food is available for those in need.
